Lowen Hospitality Cut Its Monthly Close by Over 30% Without Adding Accounting Staff

Lowen Hospitality Management cut its monthly close time by more than 30 percent after moving to HIA’s ERP and accounting platform in 2024, and it is now targeting a close five to seven days after month end. The Dallas-Fort Worth operator runs 10 Marriott and Hilton properties with 1,266 rooms, according to Hospitality Net.

The gain came from removing manual work. Staff used to key PMS reports by hand and route approvals on paper. The platform now connects directly to the property management and payroll systems, so general managers get verified daily reports each morning, and the portfolio gets daily profit and loss visibility instead of a statement that is weeks old by the time anyone reads it.

Two details matter for operators. First, Lowen runs a 30-minute daily data quality review across every property. Automation did not remove the accountability; it moved the check from month end to every morning, when a bad posting can still be corrected cheaply. Second, the company added a dual-branded downtown Dallas hotel without expanding its accounting staff. Back-office headcount did not have to grow in step with room count, which is the labor cost argument for finance automation in its plainest form.

Regional Director of Operations Rafael Luque described the change as going from living in a house lit by candles to having LED lighting and solar panels on the roof.

The practical takeaway for management companies and owners: a faster close is useful, but a daily, trusted P&L is what changes decisions. When labor and expense variances are visible while the month is still open, a general manager can act on them. Portfolio growth then depends less on hiring accountants and more on how clean the data from each property is.
