Google Is Now Selling Placement Inside the AI Answer, and IHG Got the First Seat

Google's new 'Highlighted Answers' and 'Direct Offers' ad formats put paid placement inside AI travel recommendations — and IHG secured the first hotel slot through an invitation-only deal, not an open auction.

Google announced two new ad formats on its Q2 2026 earnings call that put paid placement directly inside AI-generated travel answers: “Highlighted Answers,” sponsored links inserted into AI recommendation lists, and “Direct Offers,” brand promotions embedded straight into AI-driven travel-planning conversations. Both sit under Google’s AI Max system, which the company says has grown from beta to more than 500,000 advertisers, citing a 15% increase in conversion and a 20% improvement in ad relevance from Gemini-powered targeting — Google’s own numbers, not independently verified. InterContinental Hotels Group secured the first hotel placement in this new inventory, and not through open auction: it came via an invitation-only arrangement, meaning access to premium placement inside AI answers is currently being allocated to large chains with direct partnerships rather than sold to any advertiser willing to bid.

That gatekeeping lands on top of a visibility problem hotels already had before Google started selling seats in the answer. A Cloudbeds study cited in a hands-on AI-discoverability test found OTAs account for 55.3% of AI citations versus just 13.6% for hotel websites — meaning even organic AI answers already lean on third-party sources hotels don’t control. Layering invitation-only paid placement on top of that imbalance doesn’t just crowd the organic answer, it adds a second gate — chain scale and a direct Google relationship — on top of the first one. Cendyn CEO Michael Bennett has already named the pattern “OTA 2.0”: a new layer of AI discovery platforms that extract visibility fees the way OTAs extract booking commissions, just earlier in the funnel.

For independent hotels and smaller brands, the practical read isn’t panic, it’s triage: the free lever — the 55.3%-versus-13.6% citation gap — is still open to anyone willing to do the content and structured-data work to get cited directly instead of through an OTA. The paid lever Google just switched on isn’t. Until Highlighted Answers and Direct Offers open beyond invitation-only chain partnerships, the only AI-answer real estate an independent property can actually compete for is the organic kind.
