AI Sends Travelers to Hotel Websites Now. Google's AI Mode Booking Could End That.
Yext found about 5 percent of people act on an AI recommendation without checking further, and Adobe data shows AI-tool visits to travel sites up 119 percent, a window Google AI Mode booking may close.
About 5 percent of people act on an AI recommendation without checking further, while roughly 49 percent go to the business’s own website, according to a Yext survey of 3,848 adults in five countries. Markus Busch of hospitality.today calls that gap the “Shortlist Effect” in a Hospitality Net opinion piece: the AI names your hotel, the guest books on your site, and nobody takes a commission. In the same survey, 53 percent searched Google or Bing.
The window is closing. Adobe data shows US travel-site visits from AI tools rose 119 percent year over year in July, and the conversion gap against other traffic narrowed from 47 percent to 1 percent. Lighthouse still puts AI tools at just under 1 percent of hotel website visits, so the channel is small today. But Google enabled hotel booking inside AI Mode in the US in late August, which can make the website visit optional. Natalie Kimball of Shiji Horizon Distribution says discovery, comparison and transaction are starting to collapse into one conversation, and she notes that Booking.com, Expedia and Hotels.com are among the partners in Google’s rollout, which gives OTAs an inventory-integration head start.
For an operator the exposure is commission. If an AI-referred guest finds your website unconvincing and rebooks on an OTA, you pay commissions that start around 15 percent for a guest you had already won. Busch’s test costs nothing: ask an AI about your own hotel, then compare your mobile first screen with Booking.com’s. Kimball’s audit list goes further: images, room descriptions and amenity listings, rate and availability sync across channels, the mobile direct-booking path, and a way to measure AI-influenced conversions.
Being mentioned is not the same as being bookable. Until the guest can finish inside the assistant, your website’s job is to confirm what the AI said.
